What is Swedish Massage?

Swedish massage is the basis for many forms of massage. It is the most popular and well-known type of massage in Western countries. It uses long strokes, kneading and friction techniques on the muscles, combined with active and passive movement of the joints. Usually oil or lotion is used to reduce pull on the skin.

It involves the use of hands, forearms or elbows to manipulate the superficial and deeper layers of the skin and muscles. The benefits of Swedish massage include increased blood circulation, mental and physical relaxation, decreased stress and muscle tension, and improved range of motion.

Why should I choose Swedish Massage?

As it can help reduce emotional and physical stress, Swedish massage, sometimes called "relaxation massage," is often recommended as part of a regular program for stress management. A full-body Swedish massage session relieves muscle tension, improves circulation and range of motion, deepens breathing and promotes general relaxation and stress-reduction.

Swedish massage also helps you obtain a feeling of connectedness, a better awareness of your body and the way you use and position it. It stretches the ligaments and tendons, keeping them flexible. Swedish Massage also stimulates your skin and nervous system while at the same time relaxing the nerves themselves.

This type of massage also has specific clinical uses in doctor supervised medical or remedial therapy. Please see my Therapeutic Massage page. If you have been injured in an automobile accident, your massage therapy may be covered by insurance as necessary and prescribed treatment. Please visit Optima Clinic for more information about massage therapy by prescription.

Swedish massage is available in 60 or 90 minute sessions. Discounts are available on three and six session purchases.
